Die erfassten Quellen umfassen handschriftliche und gedruckte Noten, Schriften über Musik und Textbücher, die in Bibliotheken, Archiven, Klöstern, Schulen und Privatsammlungen aufbewahrt werden. RISM wurde 1952 in Paris gegründet und hat seit 1960 seine Zentralredaktion in Kassel, seit 1987 in Frankfurt. In 32 Ländern arbeiten rund 100 Mitarbeiter an der Beschreibung der musikalischen Quellen. Zudem dokumentieren sie in eigenen Libretto-Projekten Textbücher, die in ihren Ländern überliefert sind. Die Publikation erfolgt über Bärenreiter Kassel (Serie A/I und C) und G. Henle München (Serie B), sowie G. Saur auf CD-Rom (Serie A/II). Durch die umfassende Katalogisierung werden musikalische Überlieferungen geschützt und der Musikwissenschaft sowie ausführenden Musikern zugänglich gemacht, was eine praktische Anwendung fördert. RISM erhielt finanzielle Unterstützung von verschiedenen Institutionen, darunter die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft und die Ford Foundation. 2011 wurde eine CD-ROM zur RISM-Serie A/I „Einzeldrucke vor 1800“ veröffentlicht.
