Das letzte Meisterwerk von Stanley Kubrick ist die Verfilmung der Schnitzlerschen Novelle (Start in den USA: 16. Juli 1999, weltweit: 9. September 1999). Es hat in den letzten Jahren keinen Film gegeben, der bereits im Vorfeld von soviel Spekulationen über Inhalt, Drehorte, Schauspieler etc. begleitet war, wie dieses letzte Vermächtnis dieses einzigartigen Regisseurs. Auch die ungewöhnlich lange Drehzeit, die das Schauspieler-Ehepaar Nicole Kidman und Tom Cruise ca. 1 1/2 Jahre von allen anderen Aktivitäten abzog, brachte für interessierte Cineasten keine neuen Erkenntnisse. Erst kurz vor Kinostart wurden sorgfältig und behutsam Berichte und Informationen lanciert, die etwas mehr über den Film, die Dreharbeiten und den Regisseur zutage fördern.
