The kibbutz is one of the greatest stories in Israeli history. The kibbutzim are collective settlements in Israel which have been written about extensively and are praised as the only example in world history of entire communities attempting to live in total equality. Intended to be a socialist utopia by early pioneers, the kibbutz was a radical experiment in communal living, gender equality, economic egalitarianism, and the reorganisation of family life. Rosie Pinhas-Delpuech, née à Istanbul, est l'un des rares écrivains turcs de langue française. Dans Suite byzantine, elle évoque son rapport aux langues. Ni le judéo-espagnol, ni l'allemand de sa mère ne sauraient en tenir lieu. Le turc est pour elle la langue "du dehors", marquant son ouverture au monde dans les rues d'Istanbul, d'où elle partira étudier en France, renonçant à écrire en turc et s'appropriant l'hébreu. Après Suite byzantine, texte singulier sur "l'enfant" dans son dédale de langues, elle a publié Anna, où elle affronte une mémoire familiale. Dans la seconde partie de ces Suites byzantines, neuf histoires gaies, graves, crues se déroulent entre les îles des Princes au large d'Istanbul, entre les langues, les sexes, les riches et les pauvres, les Grecs, les Turcs, les Juifs, les Arméniens. Ces histoires prolongent et éclairent Suite byzantine, ressuscitant l'Istanbul cosmopolite des années 60 et révélant un vrai talent de nouvelliste.
