Dopo aver subito torture e sopportato la perdita di persone care nel corso della breve ma letale Guerra degli Esseri Fatati, Sookie Stackhouse è ferita nel corpo e nell'anima ed è infuriata. I sentimenti che ritiene di provare per il vampiro Eric Northman sono praticamente l'unico aspetto piacevole della sua esistenza, ma proprio a causa della loro relazione, lui è tenuto sotto stretta osservazione da parte del nuovo re dei vampiri.
