Perché nell'avventura precedente Sherlock Holmes era precipitato, insieme al suo acerrimo nemico Moriarty, in un crepaccio, inghiottito dalle tenebre. Un finale che non riuscì gradito ai lettori. E così, costretto dalle insistenze del pubblico e dell'editore, Conan Doyle fece 'resuscitare' il suo personaggio abbandonando il genere del romanzo storico cui avrebbe preferito dedicarsi.
