Traces the history of the Yiddish-speaking, left-wing Jewish immigrant community in France from 1881 to the late 1970s, describing their struggle against French xenophobia and antisemitism. From the early 1930s on, East European Jews were subject to immigration quotas, arbitrary expulsions, and hostility on the part of the unemployed and the fascist organizations. The antisemitic trend also affected the left-wing trade unions. The immigrant community fought antisemitism, especially in the framework of LICA. Describes anti-Jewish measures by the German occupiers and the Vichy government. Emphasizes French popular solidarity with the Jews during the deportations, and resistance activities by left-wing groups, especially the Union des Juifs pour la Résistance et l'Entraide. The UJRE continued its struggle after 1945, including the restoration of citizenship to immigrant Jews denaturalized by the Vichy laws.
