El protagonista y narrador, Asle, es pintor, viudo y vive en una casa en Dylgja donde anteriormente vivía con su esposa Ales. Ahora vive solo y sus únicos amigos son el vecino Åsleik, un soltero y pescador, y Beyer, un galerista que vive en Bjørgvin, a un par de horas en coche al sur de Dylgja. En el segundo volumen de la Septología, Asle vuelve a mirar el cuadro con las dos líneas que se cruzan. Y piensa en la infancia.
