When Michael Collins was assassinated in August 1922, it fell to WT Cosgrave as new Head of Government to bring the new Irish Free State into being and defeat DeValera & the IRA in a Civil War. After ten years of rule by Cosgrave, deValera's new Party, Fianna Fail won the election and WT Cosgrave handed over power peacefully to deValera in 1932. Irish democracy was ensured. Cosgrave was a strong man who saw the country riven by the IRA but brought the ship of State into port safely. He was the most unassuming of men and without personal ambition.
