Founded in 1916 by William E. Boeing, a wealthy timber merchant, the mighty Boeing Company's 100-year history spans decades of rich achievement and technological development. Designed in response to a 1951 requirement, the C-130 Hercules is the most successful military airlifter ever built. Since it first flew in prototype form on 23 August 1954, more than 2,100 have been produced in over eighty different versions. Across its variants, the Hercules serves more than sixty air forces, as well as many civilian cargo operators, in a multiplicity of roles, including air-to-air refueller, gunship, airborne command post, flying hospital and firefighter. This rugged and easily maintained aircraft entered service in 1956 with the USAF Tactical Air Command. Ten years later the 'Charlie 130' was providing the essential logistical support in Vietnam. The 'Herky Bird' or 'Fat Albert', as the C-130 is fondly known, has proved a key component in humanitarian relief operations ever since, in all parts of the world. Jak Thunderbolt, tak Messerschmitt Bf 109G představovaly na poli konstrukce motoru a výzbroje stíhacího letounu obrovský pokrok, přitom se navzájem velice lišily. Uhlazený, esteticky vytříbený Messerschmitt byl o polovinu lehčí než těžkotonážní, sudu podobný americký Thunderbolt, největší a nejtěžší jednomotorový jednomístný stíhací stroj poháněný vrtulí, jaký byl kdy postaven. Autor přibližuje čtenáři vývoj těchto letadel, slovně i obrazově průběh konstrukčních prací, snahu co nejvíce vylepšit jejich letové vlastnosti a dosáhnout co největšího doletu, popisuje klíčové části obou letounů, postupné úpravy, výběr motoru a výzbroje. Bezmála tři desítky let sloužil Phantom ve všech složkách armády Spojených států. Vedle základních leteckých jednotek také na letadlových lodích amerického námořnictva i u sboru námořní pěchoty, v 80. letech u leteckých záloh. Nejrušnějším obdobím byla pro Phantomy válka ve Vietnamu. K základním úkolům F4 patřily útoky na pozemní cíle, ničení protivzdušné obrany, ale zejména vybojování vzdušné převahy nad nebezpečnými stíhačkami MiG různých typů. F-86 Sabre byl prvním bojovým letounem západní konstrukce, který byl schopen překonat rychlost zvuku a dorovnat technologický náskok Sovětského svazu v letecké technice. Teprve tento stroj, přestože poněkud zaostával ve stoupavosti a také obratnosti, byl téměř rovnocenným soupeřem pro sovětskou stíhačku. F-86 sloužily v letectvu v mnoha zemích po celém světě (např. v Kanadě, Japonsku, Austrálii), počátkem 60. let dosluhovaly F-86 ve Spojených státech u jednotek Letecké národní gardy. "Osvoboditel" nepředstavoval oproti svému předchůdci, "létající pevnosti" Boeing B-17, žádné pronikavé zlepšení a v některých směrech (vlastnosti motorů, celková stabilita, řízení) byl dokonce horší. Největší předností B-24 byl ale dolet, který byl výrazně delší, než u kteréhokoliv tehdejšího letadla. Liberatory sloužily na všech větších bojištích, výrazně pomohly RAF v bitvě o Atlantik s německými ponorkami, osvědčily se i jako transportní a průzkumná letadla. V knize nalezneme dosti podrobné údaje o vývoji, výrobě a výzbroji, technicko- taktická data, dočteme se o nasazení B-24 v Evropě i Tichomoří, zvláštní kapitola je věnována Liberatorům britského Královského letectva. Fotografie, bokorysy, dodatky, rejstřík, seznam literatury. Velmi kvalitní publikace o dálkovém bombardéru B-24 letectva Spojených států z období 2. světové války.
