Miguel Barnet und eine Gruppe von Ethnologen besuchten den hundertdreijährigen Esteban Montejo, einen hochintelligenten und eigensinnigen Mann voller Erinnerungen an das Leben der Sklaven, die Abschaffung der Sklaverei auf Kuba und den Befreiungskrieg gegen die spanischen Kolonialisten. Montejo, ein Cimarrón, lebte viele Jahre in Einsamkeit in den Bergen, bevor er sich den Aufständischen anschloss, die gegen die amerikanische Invasion kämpften. Die Erzählungen basieren auf Tonbandaufnahmen von Barnet, die über Monate mit Montejo geführt wurden. Besonders beeindruckend ist die bildreiche Sprache des ehemaligen Sklaven, die eine lebendige Vermischung von afrikanischen Mythen und Katholizismus zu einer der afro-kubanischen Religionen zeigt, wie Barnet in seinem Werk über afro-kubanische Kulte beschreibt. Montejo schildert sein Leben aus persönlicher Sicht: die Zeit als Sklave auf einer Zuckerrohrplantage, das Leben in den Bergen, den Krieg und die Zeit, als die Spanier vertrieben wurden, aber durch Nordamerikaner ersetzt wurden. Lévi-Strauss bemerkte, dass dieses Werk eine neue Gattung ethnologischer Literatur eröffnet, die eine tiefere Vertrautheit mit der Realität der untersuchten Ethnie zeigt.
