Harsusi is a South Semitic language spoken in the Jiddat al-Harasis area in Oman by some 500 to 1.500 speakers. It is strongly related to Mehri, a language spoken in Oman and Yemen, with some 100.000 speakers. There is very little documentation on Harsusi. The only work available was the Harsusi Lexicon by T. M. Johnstone (d. 1983), who did fieldwork not only on Harsusi but on all six South Semitic languages in the early seventies of the 20th century. The texts on which T. M. Johnstone based his Harsusi Lexicon are published in this book. Or to put it differently: with these texts Johnstone’s Harsusi Lexicon comes to life.

Mehri is a South-Semitic language spoken by some 100.000 people in the far eastern governorate in Yemen and in the mountains of Dhofar in Oman. The Mehri texts in this book represent the Omani dialect. The texts are based on the fieldwork materials of the late Professor T. M. Johnstone (1924-1983), an expert in this field. The author Harry Stroomer (Leiden University, The Netherlands) is a specialist in South-Semitic and Berber languages.
