It was mid-summer, 1940. Paris had fallen. Brittania anticipated German invasion. Against this backdrop, the English Province of the Society of the Jesuits, like their brothers throughout the world, sought an appropriate way to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Jesuit order. To mark the occasion, Father James Brodrick, S.J., an historian with a wry wit, had written a spirited account of the origins of the Jesuits and their founding fathers. Although severely restricted by wartime rationing of paper, printers Longmans, Green and Co. Ltd. proceeded with a limited run, and the first edition of "The Origin Of This Jesuits" was born. V kontextu evropských, nejen regionálních dějin, anglický autor odkrývá směsici údajů složitých náboženských dějin 16. století, v níž centrální postava Petra Kanisia, zakladatele České provincie jezuitů, hrála nezastupitelnou roli. Bližší prozkoumání Brodrickova textu ukáže, že dokázal spojit pečlivou mravenčí archivní práci s vtipnou slovní interpretací. Kniha obsahuje velké množství pasáží přeložených ze světcových dopisů a dalších písemností, neboť je to patrně nejsprávnější a nejupřímnější způsob, jak se dá jeho osobnost čtenáři přiblížit. Tyto dopisy, napsané v originále latinsky, německy a italsky, jsou na hony vzdáleny krásné literatuře. Kromě skutečnosti, že Kanisius nebyl příliš nadán představivostí, musel, jak on sám říká ve zběsilém spěchu, kdy chtěl jen sdělit to, co měl na srdci, a to co nejrychleji. Myšlenka, že by někdo psal dopis s ohledem na eventuální budoucí knižní vydání, byla v tehdejší době naprosto mimo dosah jeho chápání. Nicméně dopisy, jakkoli se mohou zdát neuhlazené a suchopárné, v sobě obsahují žíly z ryzího zlata a samy o sobě dostatečně autenticky vystihují, jaký byl jejich autor duchovní velikán.

Poutavě zpracované literární dílo předního anglického historika líčí osudy první generace jezuitů. Kromě věcně klidného pohledu na takzvané vládnoucí dvory doby jsou cenné autorovy pasáže o zámořských misionářích (např. o jejich půtkách s lidojedy).
