Geheimnisvoll blieben für das Kind viele der Geschehnisse, Stillschweigen herrschte über den Tod von Emilies geliebtem Bruder, und auch das Verhältnis zwischen Emilie und ihrem Mann war stets undurchsichtig. Immer auf der Suche nach ihrer Vergangenheit, trägt die Erzählerin nun ihre Erinnerungen und die Zeugnisse anderer zusammen; die Berichte Dorners, des deutschen Photographen, die Erzählungen von Hakim, ihrem Onkel, und die von Hindié, der besten Freundin Emilies, verschmelzen zu einem Brief an ihren in Europa lebenden Bruder, in dem sie ihre eigene Stimme »wie einen riesigen, aber einfühlsamen Vogel über den anderen Stimmen schweben läßt«.
