Vypráví o mládí stráveném mezi přáteli, mezi něž patřila i Anna Achmatovová, o vykonstruovaném soudu a o vyhnanství na ruském severu, o vynucené emigraci r. 1972, o pobytu v Evropě a USA a o převzetí Nobelovy ceny za literaturu v r. 1987. Čtyři kapitoly jsou věnovány Brodského oblíbeným autorům: Marině Cvatajevové, Anně Achmatovové, Robertu Frostovi a Wystanu Hugh Audenovi.
