This book challenges established views on the comparative political economy of industrialized democracies, particularly the assumption that social democratic governments prioritize labor interests. It reveals a divide within the labor force between secure employees (insiders) and those without stable jobs (outsiders). The analysis centers on three key policy areas: employment protection, which concerns insiders, and both active and passive labor market policies, relevant to outsiders. The argument posits that social democratic parties often achieve their objectives by favoring policies that primarily benefit insiders. Consequently, while social democratic governments tend to implement more employment protection legislation, they do not necessarily enhance labor market policies for outsiders. Additionally, the book discusses factors that could mitigate insider-outsider disparities and lessen their impact on social democratic governance. These ideas are examined through a combination of methodologies, including surveys and macrodata, alongside a detailed comparison of three case studies: Spain, the UK, and the Netherlands. This reinterpretation of social democracy's challenges offers a significant contribution to the fields of comparative politics and political economy.
