When Dom Perignon asked Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld to capture his vision of a woman's sensual fantasies in a series of photographs for the champagne brand, Lagerfeld began by immersing himself in paintings, novels and films. In the end he found his visual inspiration in late-eighteenth-century drawings by Moreau the Younger and in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. His racy literary references include scenes from Colette's Cheri , featuring a young man in love with a former high-class courtesan, and from Laclos' Dangerous Liaisons . Without hesitation Lagerfeld chose Helena Christensen as his heroine. "I couldn't imagine using any one else." And Christensen says of the shoot, "There was a slightly erotic feeling in the air, but handled with extreme elegance. It's a bit like describing the feeling champagne gives you."
"Architecture, which acquires tranquility and balance thanks to geometric order, obtains dynamism thanks to natural phenomena and human movements." This quotation from architect Tadao Ando introduces this book of photographs by Karl Lagerfeld of Ando's Vitra conference pavilion. This is not the first time Lagerfeld has focused his considerable energies on architectural photography, and the results are impressive. He transfers the basic ideas of Ando's architecture into photographic form, and presents both close-ups of geometric detail as well as views of the whole building and environs. Lagerfeld finds a sensitive language to reveal the characteristics implicit in Ando's creation.

The ultimate repertoire of wit and wisdom from fashion's sharpest pin Karl Lagerfeld is a modern master of couture. He is also famously outspoken: his wise, surprising statements pop up like offbeat news flashes. This collection of quotations pays homage to the legendary éminence grise of the fashion world. Lagerfeld's pronouncements - on fashion, women, art, politics, love, and life high and low - are famously oracular, seized upon by fashionistas, acolytes and sages around the world. Created with the full approval of the designer himself, this cornucopia of Lagerfeld's maxims is required reading for us all today as we negotiate the trickiest curves of modern life. Cultivated, unpredictable, provocative, sometimes shocking, Lagerfeld's 'bons mots' are always impossible to ignore. Jean-Christophe Napias is an author, translator and editor of books on dandies, dance music and camp culture. Sandrine Gulbenkian is director of Parigramme, a Parisian publishing house. Patrick Mauriès is a writer and publisher of many notable titles on fashion and design, including Jewelry by Chanel, also published by Thames & Hudson.
Karl Lagerfeld has run Chanel for the last 24 years, with Lady Amanda Harlech at his side for half of that time in the role of a personal and professional muse. Visions and Decision , their second collaborative book, combines Lagerfeld's black-and-white photographs of Claudia Schiffer, Brad Kroenig and Sebastien Jondeau from a 1993 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque advertising campaign with a story by Harlech. Her tale charts the sensual fantasies of a young bachelor, Ghyslain, and Malvina, his bride-to-be; he is charming and ruthless, she is beautiful and demure. "This is a story of a young, handsome, old-money couple," explains Lagerfeld. "Everything is perfect, they're just a little bored." With Dom Pérignon as the catalyst, Ghyslain fantasizes about transforming his prim fiancée into a cast of seductive characters. Harlech's darkly humorous sensibility, which informs the Chanel aesthetic, is pitch perfect in this story of decadent ennui and passive seduction. Modeled on a traditional fairy-tale book with a title plaque embossed in silver, a black cloth bookmark and silver printing throughout, Visions and a Decision is perhaps not without a playful moral. Suppressing our desires is a dangerous thing; liberating them could be the beginning of a delectable existence.

Few modern buildings embody such modernist beauty and mythical magic as Casa Malaparte, designed by the Italian poet and novelist Curzio Malaparte in 1937 as a home for himself, and later made famous by Jean-Luc Godard's 1963 film Contempt , starring Brigitte Bardot. "No place in Italy has such a wide horizon to stare at, nor such a depth of feeling," wrote Malaparte of the locale in Capri where he erected the Casa. "A site only for strong men and for free spirits.… Here, in this wilderness, I am the first one who will build a house."Karl Lagerfeld visited the site for five days in November 1997 and took a series of Polaroids, which he subsequently transferred to Arches moldmade paper. First published in 1999 (and later as a slipcased edition with House in the Trees ), this beautifully printed book is now made available again as a single-volume edition.
For decades the king of Paris fashion, Karl Lagerfeld is an artist whose work comes to life in front of the camera. But what happens when this legendary designer steps behind the lens? Magic, mystery, and more, as is evidenced by this volume of beautiful, sensual, and imaginative images that reveals an entirely new dimension to Lagerfeld’s genius. Spanning all aspects of the genre from classic to avant-garde, these photographs—many of which have never before been published—recall the work of Atget, Richter, and Peter Lindbergh. Scenes of Paris streets and buildings, fashion models, celebrities, nudes, still-lives, and other objects of beauty provide insight into Lagerfeld’s aesthetic. And his discerning eye captures the life of high fashion, while also possessing a reverence for the unexpected moment.
