Fabre stand mit vielen Geistesgrößen seiner Zeit in Kontakt, beispielsweise mit Charles Darwin, dessen Auffassung der Instinkte und der Entstehung der Arten er vehement ablehnte. Doch mit seinen Erinnerungen schuf er ein unvergleichliches, unerschöpfliches künstlerisches Monument, ein so ungewöhnliches wie herausragendes literarisches Meisterwerk, mit dem es ihm gelingt, dem Leser die Poesie des Lebens und der Natur zu offenbaren. »Ich glaube nicht an Gott, ich sehe ihn«, versicherte er im hohen Alter. Francouzský entomolog v knize nepřekonatelným způsobem popisuje svá neobvyklá pozorování světa hmyzu a pavouků (tyto osminohé dravce řadíme nikoli mezi hmyz, ale do samostatné třídy pavoukovců). Kniha vyšla v českém překladu poprvé v roce 1925 a už tehdy vzbudila pozornost a obdiv mimo jiné i Karla Čapka. Nejen v této, ale i v další své knize Z pamětí hmyzovědce (zpřístupněné v nedávné době posluchačům ČR) autor přesvědčuje, že se o životě hmyzu (a pavouků) dá psát nejen zajímavě, ale i napínavě.

Devant la maison est un vaste bassin alimenté par l'aqueduc qui fournit l'eau aux fontaines du village. Ce nom voulu par le naturaliste désigne pour nous à la fois la maison et l'aire de végétation laissée à l'état sauvage, harmas, ou herme comme cela se dit pour une terre inculte en langue provençale. mais aussi ses abords dans un sens plus général. Nous ne saurions envisager une anthologie relative à l'Harmas sans prendre en compte non seulement l'habitation et le terrain attenant mais aussi les garrigues sérignanaises, les collines rocheuses avoisinantes et le mont Ventoux, autant de biotopes, que Fabre parcourut, aima pour leur beauté, leur richesse botanique et entomologique.
