Die Autoren - Gilbert mehr journalistisch recherchierend, Cotterell mehr mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlich argumentierend - versuchen hier, von unterschiedlichen Ansatzpunkten ausgehend, dann aber ihre Thesen gegenseitig stützend, zu beweisen, daß und warum nach dem Maya-Kalender 3114 v.Chr. eine Weltepoche begonnen hat und 2012 n.Chr. dramatisch enden wird. Ausgehend vom gleichen Sargdeckel von Palenque, auf dem Däniken schon einen Astronauten sitzen sah, wird ein Zusammenhang zwischen Mayakalender, Sonnenfleckenzyklen und Humanbiologie gesehen. Wenn das Buch auch populär geschrieben ist, so sollten doch vor allem für die ausführlichen Anhänge (Cotterell) Grundkenntnisse wenigstens in Mathematik, Astrophysik und Astronomie vorhanden sein.
