Se Muriel Spark, come molti indizi lasciano ritenere, ha sognato un testa a testa con Agatha Christie, mai è arrivata vicino ad affrontarlo, e a vincerlo, come in questo romanzo. Dove un groviglio di trame si dipana da un pretesto già irresistibile: le riunioni periodiche di un inaudito circolo spiritistico frequentato dal luciferino medium Patrick Seton, in cui si danno convegno personaggi molto diversi fra loro (e, va da sé, diversamente eccentrici) ma uniti dal medesimo stato civile, e più ancora da un’avversione a cambiarlo così tenace da condurre, se le circostanze lo richiedono, anche al delitto. Per di più questa situazione di partenza, già suggestiva quanto basta, viene immersa in una Londra trasformata con pochi tocchi in una geografia metafisica: sarà dunque impossibile non essere subito presi da questo romanzo, e altrettanto impossibile non leggerlo con l’immensa gratitudine che va tributata ai – rarissimi – autori per i quali scrivere è inventare un crimine e al tempo stesso sorriderne.
