Na přelomu 1271 - 1272 se vypravili do Orientu tři benátští kupci z urozeného rodu Polů. Dostali se až do Číny, zpátky se poté vraceli námořní cestou přes Indočínu, Indonésii, Cejlon a Indii až k Perskému zálivu. Marco Polo byl ovšem mezi tím nějaký čas v Chánových službách.
Milion (italsky Il Milione) je cestopis Marca Pola ze 13. století o jeho cestě do Asie. Po uveřejnění byla kniha v Evropě velmi populární, protože popisovala exotické prostředí, jež bylo v té době v módě spolu s rytířskými příběhy. Marco Polo diktoval příběh románovému spisovateli Rustichellovi z Pisy, když s ním byl v letech 1298–1299 vězněn.
