Francouzský malíř Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, známý jako Balthus, ačkoliv není v českém prostředí příliš znám, je světově uznávaným umělcem. Jeho pozdní vzpomínky, namluvené těsně před smrtí, přibližují jeho dlouhý život a osobité dílo, které ovlivnily významné osobnosti 20. století. První české knižní představení Balthuse obsahuje úvodní chronologickou studii od Františka Mikše a rozhovory s malířem a jeho japonskou manželkou Setsuko Ideta, které vedl Miloš Doležal v letech 2000 a 2001.
Balthusovo jméno je obklopeno mnoha mýty a povídačkami, přičemž jeho umělecká cesta vzbuzovala obdiv i odmítání. Odrážel tradiční figurativní klasiku, což mu přineslo kritiku jak od modernistů, tak od moralistů, zejména kvůli erotickému napětí v jeho dílech. Nicméně redukování jeho umění pouze na erotické obrazy adolescentních dívek je zavádějící; Balthus vytvořil také mnoho dalších vynikajících děl v různých žánrech, včetně městských scén, portrétů a krajin. Jeho dívky jsou ambivalentní, spojují v sobě cudnost a smyslnost, což dodává jeho dílům podmanivou sílu.

Balthus fut un peintre rare. Rare par son talent si singulier, par sa vision de la peinture, par son refus de suivre les modes. Rare aussi par sa lgendaire discrtion, cette rticence profonde parler de son uvre. Dans ce livre d'entretiens commencs en 1989, et se droulant sur une douzaine d'annes, on peut enfin entendre la vritable voix du peintre. Nella primavera del 2016, il Kunstforum di Vienna presenta per la prima volta in Austria una retrospettiva dedicata all'opera di Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, noto come Balthus. Nato nel 1908 a Parigi da genitori polacco-russi, Balthus trascorre un'infanzia tra Parigi, Berna, Berlino e Ginevra. La sua pittura, che rimane sempre legata alla concretezza, si sviluppa a partire dai maestri del Quattrocento italiano, attraverso il confronto con il surrealismo e la Nuova Oggettività. Questo progetto esplora i temi principali di Balthus: la strada e la città in contrasto con la natura pastorale, il ritratto classico e l'atto femminile, prevalentemente rappresentato da adolescenti. Un capitolo è dedicato ai suoi progetti teatrali, in particolare ai decori per il "Cosi fan tutte" di Mozart, creati nel 1950 per il festival di Aix en Provence. Si invita a esplorare l'aura misteriosa, arcaica e inquietante delle immagini di Balthus, che evocano la fantasia dell'infanzia e non mancano di una certa crudeltà.
