Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), is a rapidly developing technology for supporting or even replacing heart and/or lung functions for days or weeks, giving the time for recovery, other therapeutic interventions or replacement of the failing organ. For many years ECMO has been an established treatment for respiratory failure in newborns and children, but recently, it has been also applied to adult respiratory and circulatory failure. Publikace kolektivu předních českých kardiologů EKG v akutní kardiologii vzbudila zasloužený zájem jak mezi kardiology, tak mezi internisty a intenzivisty. Po úspěchu prvního vydání autoři nyní publikaci rozšířili a doplnili, přičemž využili velmi kladného ohlasu u odborné veřejnosti spojeného s řadou námětů a návrhů. Přestože elektrokardiografie je dnes považována za zcela rutinní metodu, jejíž důvěrná znalost se všeobecně předpokládá, situace v reálné praxi je bohužel zcela opačná. Správná interpretace EKG křivek je ve své podstatě velmi obtížná. O to cennější je originální koncepce této publikace, která na rozdíl od většiny „klasických“ učebnic neuvádí pouze výčet typických obrazů, ale pečlivě vysvětluje, jakým postupem dojdeme ke správné diagnóze. Maurice-Marie-Emile Leblanc (1864-1941) was a French novelist and writer of short stories, known primarily as the creator of the fictional gentleman thief and detective Arsene Lupin, often described as a French counterpart to Conan Doyle's creation Sherlock Holmes. The first Arsene Lupin story appeared in a series of short stories serialized in the magazine Je Sais Tout, starting in No. 6, dated 15 July 1905. Clearly created, at editorial request, under the influence of, and in reaction to, the wildly successful Sherlock Holmes stories, the roguish and glamorous Lupin was a surprise success and Leblanc's fame and fortune beckoned. In total, Leblanc went on to write twenty-one Lupin novels or collections of short stories. The character of Lupin might have been based by Leblanc on French anarchist Marius Jacob, whose trial made headlines in March 1905; it is also possible that Leblanc had also read Octave Mirbeau's Les 21 Jours d'un Neurasthenique (1901), which features a gentleman thief named Arthur Lebeau. Leblanc also wrote two notable science fiction novels: Les Trois Yeux (1919) and Le Formidable Evenement (1920).

Extrakorporální membránová oxygenace (ECMO) je jednou z nejprogresivnějších metod současné kardiologie i celé medicíny. Nyní již jde o uznávanou záchrannou („rescue“) metodu v léčbě těžkého respiračního anebo kardiálního selhání. Podpora systémem ECMO může být zahájena velmi rychle, v urgentních situacích jak perkutánním, tak chirurgickým přístupem, a poskytuje čas k rozhodnutí o dalším postupu. Na rozdíl od jiných „mimotělních“ metod lze ECMO aplikovat bez dlouhé přípravy, včetně náhlé srdeční zástavy rezistentní k standardní resuscitaci. Indikace ECMO rychle přibývají, tak jak se metoda rozšiřuje, a zahrnují již nyní široké spektrum situací jak elektivních, tak urgentních. Díky metodě ECMO přežívají pacienti jak např. s kardiogenním šokem způsobeným akutním koronárním syndromem na jedné straně, tak např. s poraněním srdce na straně druhé. ECMO postupně mění pohled na stavy, které jsme tradičně považovali za neslučitelné se životem. Kniha dvou předních českých kardiologů je napsána právě s cílem rozšířit metodu tak, aby se v ČR postupně stala jedním ze standardních přístupů v řadě situací, které zatím končí fatálně.
