"Breakfast Of Champions" is vintage Vonnegut. One of his favorite characters, aging writer Kilgore Trout, finds to his horror that a Midwest car dealer is taking his fiction as truth. The result is murderously funny satire as Vonnegut looks at war, sex, racism, success, politics, and pollution in America and reminds us how to see the truth.
Che cosa succede al più famoso dissacratore del "sogno americano" quando un regista gli anticipa una bella somma per scrivere una sceneggiatura? Bene, dietro consiglio del suo consulente fiscale, Chinaski/Bukowski si compra una Bmw nera ("Le Bmw nere sono le macchine dei duri" dice) e una casa ("Se vi dicono altrimenti non credeteci. La vita comincia a 65 anni" spiega quando ne è in possesso). Una moglie molto più giovane di lui ce l'ha già ("Mandata dagli dei ad allungarmi di dieci anni la vita. Nel bene e nel male"). Sembrerebbe che anche il cantore e cronista degli emarginati e dei disadattati d'America si sia integrato. E che proprio come la maggior parte dei suoi lettori di vent'anni fa sia rientrato - anzi entrato per la prima volta - nel sistema. Ma non è detto.
