Pod vnějším rámcem posledního dne bývalého britského konzula, jenž hledá záchranu v alkoholu, kreslí obraz světa 20. století s hrozbou fašismu a rozpadem západní civilizace. Přeložil František Jungwirth, verše přeložil Jan Zábrana a ty španělské přeložila Pavla Lidmilová.

Jeden deň bývalého konzula plný lásky, alkoholu, znechutenia, sebaľútosti, spomienok a utrpenia. Druhou hlavnou postavou je tu alkohol, ktorý je tu spoločenskou normou, cestou, únikom i záhubou, únikom pred problémami aj ich povodcom... Slovenská mutácia diela nie je zrovna najlepším počinom,prekladateľ Pavel Vilikovský ráta s tým, že čitateľ má nejaké základy zo španielčiny a latiny, nemecké state preložil kurzívou v slovenčine s akcentom – česká verzia to riešila poznámkami pod čiarou, čo knihe dodalo potrebnú atmosféru.
