Circa 500 anni fa, il 18 aprile 1506, Papa Giulio II posò la prima pietra della nuova Basilica di San Pietro, in corrispondenza del pilone che conserva la reliquia della Veronica. Nel 2006 si è celebrato il cinquecentenario di questo evento, che ha ispirato la presente pubblicazione, pensata come guida per chi desidera organizzare visite o esplorare il tempio in autonomia. Essa offre indicazioni per strutturare un percorso e rispolverare nozioni pregresse. La Basilica di San Pietro è il centro della Cristianità, sebbene il primato spetti alla Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, come recita l'iscrizione sulla facciata. Nonostante ciò, con il ritorno dei Papi da Avignone nel 1377, la sede del Vescovo di Roma si è spostata dal Laterano al Vaticano, cambiando il rilievo delle due chiese. L'altezza degli obelischi delle due basiliche evidenzia questo primato, con quello di San Giovanni più alto di quello di San Pietro. La pubblicazione intende accompagnare la visita, permettendo a gruppi e singoli di apprezzare appieno gli aspetti religiosi e storico-artistici della basilica e i suoi personaggi chiave.
