Austen, e' ha un tempo uno dei piu' essenzialmente austeniani. Raffinatissimo gioco intellettuale in cui realta' e immaginazione si affrontano riflettendosi l'una nell'altra, nella apparente semplicita' di una narrazione di straordinaria immediatezza che sembra nascere, "farsi", di pagina in pagina, il romanzo si caratterizza per una complessa struttura a piu' livelli in cui la grande scrittrice inglese, rivela, come in un gioco ad incastro l'origine e l'essenza della sua narrativa. Divertita denuncia dei pericoli di una acritica accettazione della letteratura, e' al tempo stesso una appassionata difesa della letteratura; parodia di falsi orrori, della romanzesca fantasia della narrativa gotica, insensibilmente si muta in un romanzo gotico di disincantato realismo le cui vicende mettono a nudo, con spietata eleganza, gli orrori autentici della realta' quotidiana.
