Nun, sollte es geschehen, so mußte es ja geschehen, bevor ich sterbe.« Seine alte, bis in seine Jugend zurückreichende, schwärmerische Liebe zu Deutschland ist Hamsun in seinen letzten Lebensjahrzehnten fast zum Verhängnis geworden. Seine Blindheit für die Schreckensherrschaft der Nazis, seine Aufforderung an die Norweger, sich mit der deutschen Besatzung doch abzufinden, empörte seine Landsleute und führte dazu, daß ihm nach dem Krieg der Prozeß gemacht wurde. Ukazuje wydarzenia na kresach będące jakby prologiem do historii z „Ogniem i mieczem” Sienkiewicza. Książka opisuje dzieje zwaśnionych rodów Miśniakowskich i Turobojskich. Zło zasiane przez Hrehora Miśniakowskiego, okrutnego i chciwego wojewodę, jest krwawym dziedzictwem - klątwą, z którą zmagają się bohaterowie powieści, szczególnie jego prawnuk rotmistrz Kazimierz. Książka przemawia filmowym klimatem i tempem zdarzeń. Jest napisana według oczekiwań dzisiejszego czytelnika, poszukującego opisu obrazami, a nie słowem, połączenia magii, cudowności z rzeczywistymi wydarzeniami historycznymi.
