This text follows David and Judy Steel on a tour of the Scottish Borders, since 1965 the location of their home and Steel's consituency. It features the rivers, woodland and hills of this region, which has for centuries been of strategic importance, to rievers and kings alike, with bloody feuds and battles. The Borders region has also provided a cultural legacy for Scotland, and the authors' journey includes such places as Floors Castle and Traquair House. The book also describes the local landmarks and landscapes which have inspired writers such as William Wordsworth, Sir Walter Scott and John Buchan. Local legends and ancient customs are also included, as are the agricultural traditions and industrial heritage of the area.
