Un amore infelice tra il giovane Werther e Carlotta, già fidanzata fedele di Alberto. Un intreccio di sentimenti governati dalla fatalità di un destino che fin dall'inizio allude a una conclusione tragica. La volontà dei due amanti, che esprimono i due volti dell'eros - amicizia e passione - non trova campo fertile per realizzare un progetto di felicità piena. werther e Carlotta vivono la loro vicenda di amanti infelici, seguendo impulsi diversi e naturalmente proiettati verso l'autodistruzione di Werther. Gran parte del romanzo ricostruisce, attraverso le lettere di Werther al suo amico Guglielmo, una vicenda autobiografica. Werther, Carlotta e Alberto sono Goethe, Carlotta e Kestner.
