    Auguste Comte fu un filosofo e il fondatore della sociologia, che sviluppò la dottrina del positivismo. Cercò di affrontare i mali sociali della sua epoca proponendo una nuova dottrina sociale basata sulla scienza. Le sue idee influenzarono profondamente il pensiero del XIX secolo, ponendo le basi per la moderna teoria sociale. Comte coniò anche il termine altruismo e ideò una "Religione dell'Umanità".
