Die Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels (erstmals erschienen 1878 unter dem Titel Geschichte Israels I, seit der 2. Ausgabe 1883 unter dem genannten Titel) von Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918) enthalten die Bündelung und entscheidende Weiterführung der kritischen Erforschung des Alten Testaments im 19. Jahrhundert. Wellhausens in den Prolegomena durchgeführte Quellen- und Tendenzkritik ist zur Grundlage der weiteren wissenschaftlichen Erforschung des Alten Testaments geworden. In ihrem Zentrum steht die spätvorexilische Datierung des Deuteronomiums und die nachexilische Datierung der Priesterschrift. Auf dieser kritisch geprüften Quellenbasis ist die Unterscheidung alttestamentlicher Geschichtsschreibung vor und nach dem Gesetz möglich geworden.
