Die beiden Autoren verstehen Traurigkeit und Depression als primäre psychobiologische Reaktionen auf den Verlust von etwas, das für das Gefühl von Sicherheit und Wohlbefinden unverzichtbar war. Konstitutionelle, eventuell auch genetische Faktoren können bei der Entstehung und für den Verlauf der Krankheit eine Rolle spielen - ausschlaggebend jedoch sind nach Auffassung der Verfasser psychische Faktoren. Dementsprechend ist eine dauerhafte Besserung oder Heilung nur mit psychotherapeutischen Mitteln zu erreichen.
