Martin Munkacsi was a self-assured and highly paid photographer, recognized as one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century photography. He played a crucial role in the evolution of modern photojournalism, transforming photography from a static medium into a dynamic art form. Munkacsi merged journalistic precision with a formal aesthetic, embodying the principles of the “Neues Sehen,” which contributed significantly to advanced art. He broke conventions by introducing motion, dramatic angles, and whimsy, creating groundbreaking fashion and sports photography. Unfortunately, much of his work has been lost or scattered worldwide, with the Ullstein Archive in Berlin preserving a substantial collection from his time in Hungary and Germany. This second edition showcases Munkacsi's diverse artistic phases and includes previously unseen images. His work reflects a complex era marked by glamour and technological obsession. Born in Koloszvár, Hungary, Munkacsi published his first sports photos in 1921 and moved to Berlin in 1927, contributing to major magazines. By the time he immigrated to the USA in 1934, he had already revolutionized fashion photography, working for Harper’s Bazaar and Life, and creating the influential series “How Americans Live.” Despite his impact, he faded from memory and passed away in New York in 1963.

Das Buch präsentiert Fotografien aus dem Zeitraum von 1860 bis ins Jahr 2006 der Sammlung F. C. Gundlach, aus der Sicht des Sammlers selbst, und macht damit die sich verändernde Zeitzeugenschaft des Mediums Fotografie sichtbar. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden Fotografien, die das Bild des Menschen im Medium seiner äußeren Erscheinung reflektieren, also der Moden, der Posen, der Mimik und der Gestik. Die der Sammlung zu Grunde gelegte Definition von ‚Mode’ als ‚Zeitgeist’ verlangt dabei zugleich eine Berücksichtigung auch jener Fotografien, die nicht als Modefotografien im engeren Sinne zu interpretieren sind, jedoch Zeitzeugenschaft reflektieren. Darüber hinaus zeigt das Buch, wie F. C. Gundlach konstant sein Konzept veränderte, andere Schwerpunkte Setzte und auf gesellschaftliche Veränderungen reagierte.
