Román Červený pokoj nám ukazuje tehdejší reálnou situaci v severských státech a poukazuje na "nečistotu" společnosti. Život bohéma, podvodné praktiky politiků, obchodníků a podnikatelů, pokrytecká morálka vládnoucích vrstev. Červený pokoj nebyl za autorova života uznáván kritiky, dnesale patří mezi největší díla severské literatury. Zážitek z románu umocňuje to, že se jedná o autorovo vyznání - o část jeho života.
