Román Červený pokoj nám ukazuje tehdejší reálnou situaci v severských státech a poukazuje na "nečistotu" společnosti. Život bohéma, podvodné praktiky politiků, obchodníků a podnikatelů, pokrytecká morálka vládnoucích vrstev. Červený pokoj nebyl za autorova života uznáván kritiky, dnesale patří mezi největší díla severské literatury. Zážitek z románu umocňuje to, že se jedná o autorovo vyznání - o část jeho života. V tomto románě vyhání postupující civilizace starého lovce z lesů a nutí ho uchýlit se na volnou prérii. I sem však pronikají o zvuky civilizace, i sem přicházejí lidé hamižní, ale také dobří a šlechetní, především jeho přátelé z indiánských kmenů, kterým, stoje na straně práva, vždy pomáhal. V jejich středu dožívá pak i poslední chvíle svého života.
