Luba Freedman Libri

This book retraces the development of classical imagery in the visual arts of the Italian Renaissance. Luba Freedman examines poems, letters, and treatises on art, which testify to the contemporary desire to depict classical myths in the style and spirit of Ovid's Metamorphoses, and to re-create the artistic patronage of the ancient Romans. This new development in art was driven by collaboration between humanists, artists, and their patrons. The extant artifacts of Roman antiquity, in addition to the study of Greek and Latin texts which brought to light descriptions of ancient paintings, were used as models for re-creating the visual culture of antiquity. Paintings of classical myths that were shaped all'antica, or in the manner of the ancients, reflected the desire of humanists to link the modern Rome with its ancient ancestry.

Die Beiträge, die im vorliegenden Band unter dem Titel Wege zum Mythos vereinigt sind, untersuchen aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln die Zugänge, durch die sich seit Beginn der Neuzeit Literatur und Kunst Europas der antiken Mythologie genähert haben. Dieser Aneignungsprozeß hat über Jahrhunderte hinweg sowohl in visuellen wie auch in textuellen Medien seine Spuren hinterlassen. Die vorliegende Publikation trägt, wie auch schon die vorausgehenden Bände der Reihe, diesem Doppelaspekt dadurch Rechnung, daß sie kunst- und textwissenschaftliche Forschungsansätze gleichermaßen zu Wort kommen läßt. Die Schriftenreihe der Beihefte versteht sich als Forum für den interdisziplinären Dialog zwischen Text- und Kunstwissenschaft zu Fragen des griechisch-römischen Mythos und seiner Rezeption. Während die bislang publizierten Bände entweder Kongreßakten oder Beiträge zu Vortragsreihen enthielten, sind für die Zukunft auch andere Konstellationen denkbar: So muß die Thematik nicht unbedingt vom Programm eines Symposiums oder eines Arbeitsgespräches bestimmt sein. Following the Vergilian tradition of the pastoral, the author guides the reader through complex imagery. The discussion includes Arcadia both as a region and as an idea, Pan as pastoral deity, and the image of the pastoral shepherd from Antiquity through the Age of Rococo. Masterpieces of classical art and European painting are considered and interpreted anew.
