Come parte centrale di una commedia in tre atti, L'Impero costituiva una sfida, dovendo reggere anche come singolo film. Quando ho scritto la sceneggiatura originale di Star Wars , sapevo già che Dart Fener era il padre di Luke Skywalker, ma non lo sapeva il pubblico. Intuivo che questo fatto, nell'attimo in cui l'avrei rivelato, sarebbe stato uno shock, ma non mi sarei mai aspettato dagli spettatori un tale attaccamento a Luke come simbolo del bene, e a Fener come incarnazione del male. Ho dovuto mettere questa rivelazione alla fine del film, e lasciare il pubblico in sospeso prima che la vicenda trovasse la sua conclusione nell'episodio successivo.
