Il conte Sigismondo d’Austria riceve in feudo un castello, documentato dal 945, che con la cappella di San Biagio è la struttura più antica del Tirolo. Dal 1473, Sigismondo lo trasforma in una moderna fortezza, ma mancano modelli architettonici e fonti storiche a riguardo.

Errichtet um 1580, erfuhr Schloss Velthurns eine reiche Ausstattung mit intarsierten Täfelungen, Öfen und Wandmalereien. Die Wandmalereien der Werkstatt Pietro Bagnatore aus Brescia orientieren sich an niederländischen Kupferstichen und illustrieren das Bildungswissen der Zeit, in das gegenreformatorische und humanistische Grundpositionen einfließen. Die Meisterschaft der Tischler Hans Spineider und Hans Rumpfer zeigt sich in der Ausstattung des sog. Fürstenzimmers.
