Taková socka, ani k politování už není, stojí na nástupišti a zapisuje si čísla projíždějících vlaků, kdo by si ho všiml…? Všimnou si ho dvě nevlastní sestry z nóbl anglických kruhů. Sedí ve vlaku, který má porouchanou lokomotivu, a z nudy se hádají. Když dojde na vize společenského uspořádání-jedna hlásá možnost proměny člověka v lepšího, druhá jeho determinovanost-rozhodnou se mladíka z nástupiště využít pro praktický experiment. Od té doby se život Ianovi promění tak, že ho sám nepoznává. Náhle je v péči bohaté mladé dívky Eupheme, která se stará o jeho šatník, žaludek, peněženku i vzdělání a snad by neodmítla stát se i jeho milenkou. Jenže to by tu nesměla být její sestra Grasham, která v předtuše prohry onen poslední krok učiní sama, a to v předvečer vlastní svatby s notně noblesním, avšak už teď zjevně nevyhovujícím ženichem.
