Catalogue raisonné, offering a retrospective of more than twenty years of graphic works in various techniques, from photocopy to serigraph on monotype, lithograph, aquatint, photogravure, in situ projects and installations. Using unpublished source material and proofs, polaroids and watercolours--some from the archives of the master printer Roger Vandaele and the artist's own studio. James Ensor (1860–1949) produced some of the most unusual paintings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Marked by psychological complexity, contradictions, and sheer eccentricity, his works―featuring such bizarre subject matter as dressed-up skeletons and macabre carnival masks―have continued to baffle and intrigue in equal measure. Ensor was born in Ostend, Belgium, and despite his success barely left his home town during his lifetime; his family’s curio shop, which was filled with exotic objects including parrots, a monkey, and masks from around the world, surely influenced the imagery of his mature work. In this volume, published to accompany a major exhibition, essays explore Ensor’s life and legacy, while leading contemporary artist Luc Tuymans comments on his selection of Ensor’s works, offering a distinctive view of Ensor, one only another artist can provide.

In der Malerei von Kati Heck (*1979 in Düsseldorf) leuchten der deutsche Expressionismus und die Neue Sachlichkeit auf. Ihre monumentalen Bilder bestechen zudem durch einen humorvollen Stilmix aus fotorealistisch dargestellten Figuren und zeichnerischen Elementen. Einzelne Partien der collagenhaft wirkenden Arbeiten sind akribisch ausgemalt, andere wiederum nur summarisch ausgeführt. Wie Robert Rauschenberg fügt Heck überdies nicht traditionelle Materialien und alltägliche Gegenstände zu höchst ungewöhnlichen Bildschöpfungen zusammen. »Deutlich und überzeugend stellt sie permanent die Kunst der Malerei infrage«, kommentierte Jan Hoet ihr Schaffen. Tuymans' Ziel war es, während der globalen pandemischen Krise aussagekräftige Bilder zu schaffen. Luc Tuymans erforscht Themen wie Geschichte und Erinnerung sowie die Beziehung zwischen Fotografie und Malerei, wobei er eine gedämpfte Farbpalette verwendet, um Leinwände zu schaffen, die gleichzeitig zurückhaltend und aber auch entwaffnend präsent sind. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Katalogs stehen vier monumentale Leinwände, auf denen Zahlen aufgebracht wurden, sowie drei weitere Gemälde und ein Animationsfilm. Seine Kompositionen sind unverwechselbar und stützen sich auf Bilder aus Fotografie, Fernsehen und Film.
