Die Auseinandersetzung zwischen der russischen Bauernschaft und der westlich orientierten Bildungselite nach der Leibeigenschaft 1861 steht im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung. Während die Elite versuchte, die Bauern gewaltsam zu modernisieren, regte sich Widerstand gegen diese Umerziehung. Eine neue Generation von Künstlern, darunter viele Frauen, begann, die kulturellen Traditionen der Bauern zu schätzen und suchte nach alternativen Wegen jenseits des modernen Fortschrittsglaubens. Noemi Smolik hinterfragt die etablierte Kunstgeschichtsschreibung und beleuchtet die wegweisenden Entwicklungen in Russland zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts.
