Probably the greatest crime committed by the Germans was the total elimination of Jewish heritage in Eastern Europe. The author goes to great effort to present what community life life was like in Poland before World War II. He then narrows it down to his own life in the Jewish sector of Bendzin. The author was one of the very few who lived through the Holocaust, and is therefore very qualified to historically record what happened to the Jews from 1939 to 1945. Before writing his story, Mr. Shay went back to Bendzin to recap memories of his dark era only to find that Communists had finished the job left undone by the Nazis. Because of this post-war condition in Poland, Mr. Shay's written record is all the more important to future generations as proof that the Holocaust for the Jews did, indeed, happen.
