Jutta's small but tidy bourgeois life runs smoothly: a harmonious family life and a spotless household—what more could a woman want? Since she has no problems of her own, Jutta focuses on those of her sister Mona, a committed feminist and chaotic eccentric—essentially a real mess. Mona can only rant about men and recognizes a mop only when she trips over it. Just as Jutta begins to despair over Mona's stubbornness, she faces a different catastrophe: her family idyll collapses like a house of cards when her husband leaves her for his secretary. Stripped of her husband's strong support, Jutta must now figure out how to cope, with only her messy sister Mona remaining as her companion in this unfamiliar situation.
