Maggiori informazioni sul libro
A novel chronicle of a lost town, set between 1894 and 1921. The story revolves around a once-thriving pastoral village that flourished through coal mining, only to decline a century later, also due to coal extraction. Today, nothing remains of the grand buildings and majestic cathedral, save for a leaning church that ominously towers over the desolate landscape. The narrative begins with a catastrophic mining disaster in 1894 that profoundly impacts the lives of the local inhabitants, including the protagonists whose intertwined fates we follow over the next twenty-five years. Barbora, Julka, and Ludwik represent three distinct storylines that weave together to create a vivid picture of these semi-forgotten times, whose harshness is almost unimaginable for contemporary readers. Each character faces life's challenges in their own way: some submit passively, while others strive to seize the opportunities presented by a tumultuous era. Yet, the relentless march of history repeatedly intrudes upon their lives, threatening to reduce their efforts to dust. The story is based on real events, many of which have yet to be explored in Czech literature, told with dramatic pacing and authenticity that transforms the narrative into a vivid cinematic experience, revealing what has long remained hidden in the thirteenth chamber of Czech history.
