Set in a dystopian 2041, the narrative follows various characters grappling with survival in a decaying city. Carissa scavenges for food, while Tom and April seek genetic approval for parenthood. Luis defends his unborn child from gang threats, and Nora waits in solitude for death. Meanwhile, Harl Babouc, an appliance repairman, is unexpectedly chosen by the gods to evaluate the worthiness of CynCity's inhabitants. As he confronts their struggles, Harl's sanity is tested while he fights to determine if they deserve to survive.
