Pinkeltje, a little fellow no bigger than a pinky finger, is recognizable by his white beard and blue pointed hat. During a storm, he loses his home and spends a night in a stork's nest before staying for a while underground with the mole family. He then meets Knabbel, a mouse who shares a burrow with his four brothers in a large house. Pinkeltje moves in with the mice and embarks on thrilling adventures. He finds himself stuck in the nose of a gigantic snowman and is rescued by Snorrebaard, the cat. He attempts to pull the fly Brommer out of a jar of syrup but nearly drowns in it himself.
