The Kon-Tiki Expedition

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

Thor Heyerdahl set out to prove a daring theory against established scientific thought: that the high culture of Polynesia originated from South America. Despite the thousands of kilometers of ocean between Peru and Polynesia, Heyerdahl believed that Kon-Tiki, a legendary chief from pre-Inca times, had sailed from Peru to Polynesia over the sea about fifteen hundred years ago. This journey could only have been made on a raft. Consequently, Heyerdahl and his friends constructed an adventurous vessel from thick balsa logs, which experts claimed would not survive the first storm. The experts were mistaken. The Norwegians completed the crossing in 97 days, landing somewhat roughly but safely on a small island. This journey highlighted that science is not solely confined to desks, laboratories, and lecture halls, but is a genuine adventure requiring the full engagement of one's personality. Throughout his magnificent book, Heyerdahl demonstrates a delightful sense of humor alongside his obsession with this monumental task, vividly recounting his thrilling voyage across the Pacific Ocean.
