In the terrible year of 1783, marked by the fallout from an erupting Icelandic volcano, the winter of the century follows in 1784. As the thaw begins, the body of a naked woman resembling Queen Marie-Antoinette is discovered within one of these structures. The narrative introduces colorful characters, including a dressmaker, a fortune-teller who reveals her secrets, a worker from the Sèvres factory who steals from Versailles, a porcelain dealer, a magistrate, and an architect. Beneath this crime lies a court conspiracy aimed at compromising the Crown. Commissioner Le Floch, surrounded by his close associates and trusted by Louis XVI, conducts an unprecedentedly detailed inquiry that leads him, after many perils, to an unexpected conclusion.
