The Rev. Thomas Marshfield has been packed off to an establishment for disordered clergymean where he is to devote a month to tracking down the nature of his own disgrace. What a smokscreen of wit and irreverance he throws up to start with! And indeed, the story of the way in which he upset his congegation (except for those female members of it whom he delighted) could hardly be told with a straight face. But each Sunday he breaks off to write a sermon: words which reveal the underlying reasons for his running wild. Thus he fights his way back through his frivoloity and pain to the roots of his faith. Perhaps his congregation might still be shocked by his conclusions, but he is finally able to trust that God may find them acceptable.
