Maggiori informazioni sul libro

In 1981, J.M. Masson was dismissed as Projects Director of the Sigmund Freud Archives after suggesting that Freud's seduction theory, initially proposed in 1895 and later rejected, might have merit. This assertion challenged Freudian orthodoxy, garnering attention from major publications. For the first time, Masson presents letters from Freud that were previously concealed, which fueled the ensuing controversy. Utilizing these letters and new findings from the Archives and Europe, Masson critiques the origins of psychoanalysis. Freud's original theory posited that emotional issues in adults stem from actual traumatic experiences in childhood, which were repressed. However, he later shifted to the belief that women had fabricated memories of such traumas, forming the basis of psychoanalysis. Masson reveals unpublished correspondence from Freud's close friend, Wilhelm Fliess, indicating Freud's serious doubts about abandoning the seduction theory. He also discovered that Freud was aware of the prevalent sexual abuse of children and may have witnessed related autopsies. Masson argues that Freud's abandonment of the seduction theory stemmed from a lack of courage rather than sound clinical reasoning, leading many in the field to distrust patients' memories of childhood trauma. This reluctance has tainted the profession, perpetuating a narrative that views such traumas as mere fantasy.
