    Autor pokračuje v líčení svých válečných osudů. Je zatčen pro dezerci a bez průtahů odsouzen na patnáct let těžkých prací - kdyby ovšem nebyl cizinec, neminul by jej trest smrti. Nesnesitelné poměry ve věznici jej přimějí, aby se dobrovolně přihlásil k práci, při níž mu doslova nahlíží smrt přes rameno: zneškodňuje nevybuchlé bomby. Naivně věří náborovému slibu, že mu bude za každých patnáct zneškodněných bomb prominut rok vězení. Pak je náhle z vězení propuštěn. Brzy však pochopí, že jediným důvodem je nedostatek vojáků na frontách - a po krutém vězení následuje stejně krutý výcvik. A tak převelení na frontu přes všechna číhající nebezpečí pociťuje jako úlevu. V nové jednotce navazuje přátelství se čtyřmi druhy, kteří jej budou doprovázet po zbytek války. Pět nerozlučných přátel čeká dlouhé období smrtelného nebezpečí a válečných strastí.
